Simon's Hiding (Candlebuds, Light, Butterflies)

"With the fading of the light the riotous colors died and the heat and urgency cooled away. The candlebuds stirred. Their green sepals drew back a little and the white tips of the flowers rose delicately."
To commence, the beautiful candle-buds, seen through Simon's eyes, is just one of many beautiful images that Simon sees in his world. It is interesting that Golding always softens his language for nature when seen through Simon's eyes. Although the candle buds can also portray Simon's personality, including his fond of nature. The way he describes the atmosphere demonstrate his sense of awe for nature. The use of light suggest the lost of Simon's logic and goodness through the images of Simon's body, water, sky and sea creatures. Adding on to Simon's fondness of nature the butterflies stand for Simon's goodness and harmony with nature. Simon's hiding symbolizes his separateness from the group. He simply goes to his hiding spot when he feels a seizure coming on.
